The shipyard has been building "Vinson of Antarctica", as the ship will be called, since summer 2019. The Toni Castro design measures 23.50 metres across and will be used for voyages from Puerto Williams in Chile. From there it will sail to the Antarctic. This can either be with the owner privately or with guests organised by Skip Novak's charter company Pelagic Yachts.
The owner is Chilean and entrusts his ship to Skip Novak, the experienced skipper who has already taken part in four Whitbread Round The World races. Among other things, Novak skippered "Drum" to third place in 1985. Since then, he has been the boss at Pelagic Yachts, which already operates two ships, "Pelagic" and "Pelagic Australis", for sailing with guests in high latitudes.
K&M Yachtbuilders is also very familiar with ships for these areas. The Bestevaer yachts from Makkum on the IJsselmeer, for example, are regularly in the ice. The first Bestevaer 53 - designed and previously sailed by designer Gerard Dijkstra, the father of the J-Class yacht boom - has recently been put up for sale. Dijkstra was also in the ice with the ship several times. Also built by K&M and also with guests in the ice is "Qilak", which YACHT has already described as a Special boat has sailed.
Over the next few weeks, "Pelagic" will be further equipped and then extensively tested. In the summer, it will first head to Norway and then to Chile.
