Boat purchase: Measurement certificates can now be applied for online at the BSHPhoto: BSH

As with the flag certificate, the measurement of recreational craft can now also be carried out at the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) can be applied for digitally. The authority is thus fulfilling an obligation imposed by the federal government to also offer citizens certain services online

The BSH issues internationally recognised tonnage certificates for sailing and motor yachts. This allows recreational craft to apply for inclusion in a shipping register. The application for recreational craft under 24 metres can now be submitted digitally. This service includes the application for a simplified measurement and is limited to determining the length of the boat.

Once the application has been successfully submitted, a bilingual tonnage certificate is issued in German and English. This is generally sufficient for the registration of the recreational craft in a shipping register. Commercial use is an exception if it is not for training purposes.

As part of the application, users can enter all the necessary information digitally, interrupt the application process and resume it at a later date, as well as upload and submit supporting documents. The application can be accessed via the Website of the BSH. To use the service, private individuals can register via the Federal user account and organisations about the ELSTER organisation account ("My company account"). This means that both private individuals and organisations, such as sailing clubs, can use the online procedure.

In addition, data can be transferred automatically and does not have to be entered manually. During the process, the BSH requests the additional information and evidence relevant to the application.

With the new service, the BSH is fulfilling the requirements of the Online Access Act (OZG), the authority announced. The law obliges the federal, state and local authorities to offer their administrative services digitally via administrative portals by the end of 2022. In addition to the application for the measurement of recreational craft and for a flag certificate, the BSH is working on preparing further administrative services so that they can then also be made available online.
