Nine years after its launch, the three-masted schooner "Eos" is still at the top of the world's 200 largest sailing yachts at 92.92 metres, as the latest ranking by BOOTE EXCLUSIV magazine reveals. The superyacht, built by Lürssen in Bremen in 2006, belongs to US media mogul Barry Diller. He is unlikely to hold the position for much longer, as several Giga sailboats are currently under construction.
"In the next ranking, we will see a new frontrunner with 'White Pearl', which will probably occupy this position for quite a long time. The yacht will be one superlative," says BOOTE EXCLUSIV editor-in-chief Marcus Krall. At over 145 metres, the mega sailing yacht currently under construction in Kiel will set new standards. The client is said to be the Russian multi-billionaire Andrej Melnichenko, who also owns the 119 metre long motor yacht "A".
The second and third places have not changed since the last ranking two years ago. Number two is the 90-metre "Athena", which was launched by Royal Huisman in 2004. However, US owner Jim Clark is currently offering the yacht for sale. In third place is the "Maltese Falcon" (88 metres) from the Italian shipyard Perini Navi. It is owned by Greek businesswoman Elena Ambrosiadou. In terms of sailcloth size, the 67.20 metre long alloy ketch "Vertigo" (8th place) leads by a clear margin. She carries 5330 square metres of cloth on her two carbon fibre masts.
17 newcomers made it into the top 200, but only one made it into the top ten longest sailing yachts. The aluminium-steel yacht "Aquijo", which displaces 1575 tonnes, now ranks fourth. Her almost 90 metre high masts have a sail area of 3200 square metres. The ranking is based on the length of the ship, with 40 metres being the minimum requirement.
The complete list of the Top 200 with details of the sailing superlatives can be found in the current issue of BOOTE EXCLUSIV.
