The Polish shipyard Sunreef Yachts has launched the first 100 Eco. The 28.65-metre-long catamaran is powered by electric propulsion and solar energy. Two electric motors, each with an output of 360 kW, provide assistance in harbour and in calm conditions. A battery bank with a capacity of 770 kWh stores the energy harvested by numerous solar panels. The shipyard claims the yacht has an unlimited range under sail and with electric assistance.

PV modules developed by Sunreef

The solar panel system is based on Sunreef’s proprietary technology. The cells are laminated into the side walls, the superstructure and the fixed bimini. A year ago, the Gdańsk engineers Solar Skin 3.0 . The cells are said to have an efficiency of 24.8 per cent and high thermal stability, even at temperatures above 100 degrees Celsius. The manufacturer states that the 100 Eco has an output of up to 45.1 kWp.

Sunreef is one of the few manufacturers to use PV modules installed vertically within the hull, which require specific angles of incidence. AI helps to position the panels in the best possible way. The bimini areas of the new Sunreef catamarans are also fitted with solar cells that are particularly suited to shaded areas. Algorithms are designed to optimise output by adjusting electrical power in real time – particularly where sails or rigging cast shadows.

Layout and fittings

Sunreef offers customers a great deal of freedom when it comes to choosing the layout. The catamaran can accommodate up to two guest cabins per hull. As an option, Sunreef can create a single large suite on the port side. Alternatively, the largest cabin can be moved to the main deck in front of the saloon, where the dining table is situated instead. The Polish shipyard relies on the work of its own designers for both the interior and exterior, and carries out all construction work with its own staff.

A large area known as the Ocean Lounge connects the interior with the sea. This design is familiar from other Sunreef models. A large garage accommodates water sports equipment. A separate room for diving equipment and additional storage space for water toys complete the offering.

A rapidly growing shipyard

Sunreef has been building luxury catamarans since 2002. The shipyard is based in Gdańsk and employs over 200 people. The 100 Eco is not the first electric model. Smaller versions measuring 60 and 80 feet are already available, and the 43-metre-long flagship Sunreef 43M Eco Under construction. The client commissioning the first 100 Eco is said to have previously owned a Sunreef catamaran. The new model, designed for “responsible long-distance cruising”, will be on display at the Monaco Yacht Show from 23 to 26 September.

“With the Sunreef 100 Eco, we are proving that the future of superyacht sailing can be both luxurious and sustainable,” said Francis Lapp, founder and president of Sunreef Yachts. “By combining electric propulsion, solar power and the efficiency of sailing, this yacht sets new standards for environmentally friendly sailing.”
