May the Fourth is a special date in the Star Wars universe. Not in the galaxy far, far away, but for fans of the film franchise here on Earth. Since 1977, the stories about the clash between the light and dark sides have been making headlines.
The 4th of May, May the Fourth, is a play on words with one of the most famous quotes in screen history: "May the Force be with you!" - May the Force be with you! The day is mainly used by Disney, which owns the rights to the space opera, to announce new Star Wars projects.
But it is not just the entertainment industry itself that is riding this wave of enthusiasm. Other companies are also drawing inspiration from the power of the franchise for May the Fourth. This includes ThirtyC, a design office for yachts on the south coast of England.
The creative minds there show that the difference between a ship and a spaceship need not be great, especially in times when the language of design is becoming increasingly diverse: They present the study for a 150-metre superyacht whose martial exterior makes no secret of its origins.
The design, with its straight lines and geometric surfaces, is modelled on a Star Destroyer, the backbone of the Galactic Empire's battle fleet - and therefore the dark side of the Force. However, the designers point out that the steel hull of the original has been extensively replaced with glass - allowing plenty of light into the darkness below deck.
It is also advertised as having a command bridge "worthy of an admiral", enough cabins for an "army of guests and crew", and a hangar for TIE tenders - alluding to the Empire's manoeuvrable fighters that are carried on board.
What remains unmentioned, however: For all its modern appearance, this is actually a genuine vintage design - after all, the look made its screen debut back in 1977. ThirtyC also sensibly decided to scale down the proportions to 1:10: With a length of 150 metres, a place can be found in many harbours - it would be much more difficult for the 1.5-kilometre-long original...
