During the Monaco Yacht Show 2022, the Conrad shipyard announced a collaboration with the renowned yacht designer and constructor. The result is the C -140 - a flybridge sailing yacht that combines a sophisticated look, luxurious living and sporty sailing.
Since the announcement, the concept originally presented by Frank Neubelt Yacht Design (FNYD) and the designers at German Yacht Couture has been extended from 130 to 140 feet in length. The reason: the long list of owner requests. Once the plans were finally finalised, the construction phase began at Conrad, a boutique shipyard based in Gdansk, Poland, which was founded in 2002 and builds yachts up to 100 metres in length.
The 8.50 metre wide C-140 consists of an Alustar hull plus a lightweight carbon superstructure. In addition to the deckhouse with fully glazed saloon, there are four luxurious accommodations on the lower deck: the highlight is the owner's cabin with two private bathrooms and access to the aft beach club. The service and crew areas for six to seven people are also spacious, including a pantry, a galley and a crew mess.
The VPP/LPP sail plan tested in the wind tunnel includes a carbon mast from Southern Spars and a carbon furling boom for a squaretop main. Depending on the wind direction, there is also a furled self-tacking staysail and a 110 per cent genoa or a code zero. This is offset by a variable draught of 3.8 to 6 metres thanks to the telescopic keel.
As the yacht is designed to sail sportily and effortlessly over long distances, the designers were supported in the hull calculations by the British hydrodynamics specialists from Cape Horn, who optimised the lines on the computer.
Safe manoeuvrability and top performance under engine were also on the owner's wish list, and so the 140 was given a hybrid drive with a 360-degree four-blade system and a bow thruster from Hundested Propeller. A cruising speed of twelve knots and a transatlantic range are guaranteed.
Storage space for long journeys has also been planned, as well as parking spaces for the tenders: a five-metre-long tender for the owners is stored on the foredeck while underway, while the boat for the crew slips into the covered lazarette under the beach club.
The shipyard sees Studio Neubelt as an asset: "We are honoured to be working with Frank again, who has introduced us to an experienced yachting gentleman," says Mikolaj Krol, CEO at Conrad. After successful motor yachts such as the C-144s line and the C-133 special model, the brand is now returning to a sailing superyacht and wants to underpin its reputation as a "renowned quality builder in Northern Europe and the international superyacht industry".
The C-140 is still under construction for a while, and is scheduled for completion in 2026. Anyone who places an order this year has the chance of a finished yacht in 2028.
