The main business of both companies is masts and trees made of carbon fibre. So far, however, they have served different markets and target groups. This is now set to change
The core business of Nordic, based near Apenrade in Jutland, is the production of comparatively smaller regatta yachts, performance cruisers and production vessels. Southern Spars from Auckland, on the other hand, handles projects for the America's Cup, the Volvo Ocean Race and other large-scale international ocean racers. Southern boss David Glen: "We have been looking for a stronger presence in Europe for some time and see good opportunities for this through the merger with Nordic Mast. And with the merger, we can now equip everything from hydrofoils to superyachts."
All jobs will be retained and the combined workforce is estimated at over 350. Lars Netterström will remain head of Nordic Mast and will take on another role within the new group. Netterström: "It is very exciting to become part of a globally operating group and to be able to benefit from its technical resources. And we are now also able to offer carbon fibre standing rigging."
