Two Frenchmen seek new niches

With the new Centurion 45s, the Wauquiez shipyard, part of the Bénéteau Group, is revitalising a once illustrious model name. The company, which has mainly focused on pilot saloon yachts in recent years, is revitalising the sporty and elegant boat for sailing enthusiasts with the Centurion series.

The aim is to achieve good performance without seeing the hot regatta scene of the international IMS circus as the new yacht's main field of activity. However, a racing version with more
sail area and IMS measurement is available. In the YACHT test, the performance cruiser impressed with its excellent manoeuvrability even when the sail area was set too large, good performance and solid construction. The characteristic lines with steep boat ends, closable transom and striking superstructure are also pleasing to the eye.

Dufour Yachts with its GibSea line, on the other hand, appeals to the true cruising sailor who accepts compromises in terms of trim and sailing performance for problem-free, comfort-orientated sailing. With a voluminous hull, relatively little cloth and a successful layout, the ship comes very close to this goal. It is comparable with the mass products of other large series shipyards. The so-called dolphin nose is a characteristic feature. The deck protruding forwards and sideways at the stem simplifies anchoring, accommodates the deflection of the blister jib line and facilitates passage past the forestay.

The tests of both boats appear in YACHT 21/02 (available from 9 October).
