There is probably no one-design class that has a harder time with evolution or even revolution than the Laser class. After all, the strict regulations are a guarantee for large starting fields: simple boats, simple technology, favourable second-hand boat prices. Laser sailors have therefore had to wait ages for long-awaited improvements such as the new spreaders, pulleys and clamps.
For years, rumours were rife that Laser was running test series with foil sails; the disciples of the moving refrigerator door, as it is also known to mockers, were already dreaming of daring foil designs, but now this:
Laser Germany has announced that a new bi-radial cut sail with heavy sailcloth (4.5 OZ Dacron) is now available, which should be more modern and, above all, more durable. The latter is mainly due to the fact that it no longer forms the notorious laser creases that were unavoidable with the old sail in the area of the mast connector. Other details have also been improved: the viewing window has been slightly enlarged, the battens are now tapered, the mast pocket has been redesigned and the reinforcements on the clew and sail pockets are stronger. According to the press release, great importance was attached to ensuring that the sail does not make the boat faster, so that it does not gain an advantage over the old sails in regattas.
The sails are therefore now approved for regattas by the class association, but they are not yet authorised for the World Cup series and the 2016 Olympic Games. After that, however, they will also be authorised at this level.
It's just a shame that Laser isn't using the new launch to reduce the price of the old, actually very expensive sails. Instead, the new sail is offered for "only" one euro more (550 euros) - plus 42.50 euros for the new battens, of course.
But as always, when something new is available in the Laser class, the disciples of the class will be delighted. That's the way it is when you have to watch enviously as your fellow sailors try out the coolest new gimmicks on their dinghies: You also enjoy the little things. And those who train more instead of tinkering are faster anyway.
