Birdyfish, the foil dinghy, is expanding its programme with the smaller IODA model. The 3.20 metre design is intended to make foiling more accessible for beginners and can be sailed by one person. Thanks to self-aligning foils, high speeds of over 20 knots should be quite easy to achieve.

With the IODA, the Tocatec shipyard, known for its high-quality Mini 6.50 Proto boats, is now launching a single-handed foiler that is intended to make this technology accessible to a broader target group. The boat is equipped with two side foils and a T-shaped stabiliser on the rudder blade. The self-aligning profiles are designed to enable an easy transition into the flight phase. IODA is to be kept stable in the air using weight trim. Complicated adjustment of parameters such as the rake should be completely eliminated, making it easy for beginners to get started with foiling.

Innovative design for easy handling

The IODA was designed from the ground up as a user-friendly foiler. The Tocatec shipyard uses a GRP hull with polyester resin, aluminium foils and a carbon fibre mast with aluminium boom. This combination of materials should make IODA not only simple, but also affordable. The Mylar sail completes the overall package. The foils can be raised in centreboard boxes, making slipping easy. The outwardly curved profiles provide a great deal of stability. The design is similar to the two larger variants from the Birdyfish family. The flight phase is therefore much more stable than with moths, for example, which only have a central T-foil. IODA should take off from around 8 knots and reach speeds of up to 23 knots. With a crew weight of 35 to 75 kilograms, the designers are also targeting young people who want to switch from an Opti to a fast foil dinghy.

500 Euro per node Speed

IODA costs 10,995 euros. It includes the hull, rig, sails, foils, rudder and all the necessary fittings and lines. Even a slip trolley is included. The price is roughly equivalent to two new Regatta Optis. If you really can do over 20 knots, that's less than 500 euros per knot. A favourable introduction to foiling. Even if a used moth is possibly cheaper, it is certainly not possible to sail stably without experience. This is the IODA Birdyfish's approach: simply sailing fast at an affordable price.
