Foiling - not for me? This is the motto of Michi Aeppli from Switzerland, who will be giving exciting talks every day on the stage in Hall A1 at Interboot. He has to make time for his presentations, because the initiator and owner of the Quant-Boats brand is in high demand at the trade fair. Visitors to the trade fair are already familiar with his exciting Quant 23 DSS foiler (presented in YACHT 19/2015). Now Aeppli has added a smaller version to his successful concept. The Quant 17 is surprisingly making its world premiere at the trade fair on Lake Constance.

The shape of the scow hull and the design of the side foils are again the work of DSS (Dynamic Stability System) specialist Hugh Welbourne from England. He has already designed the Quant 23, the world's first fully foiling and therefore "airworthy" keelboat. With the Quant 17, he is now realising the same concept as a dinghy. The way the Quant concept works is remarkable because it provides for four different movement modes: Displacement, planing, semi-foiling and full-foiling. On a Facebook post Video the differences are explained.

The Quant 17 is built in England using a composite construction and vacuum infusion process. The prototype presented in Friedrichshafen is still too heavy at 150 kilograms. The target for the series is a ready-to-sail total weight of just 120 kilograms. Despite being slightly overweight, the prototype has already impressively demonstrated its airworthiness (see video below).

Project initiator Michi Aeppli sees the target group for his Quant 17 as sporty, ambitious sailors of all ages who want to have a lot of fun on the water. However, the Swiss also sees his concept as a possible youth boat to introduce young people to the booming sport of foiling. With this in mind, the Quant 17 will present itself as a strictly standardised class without many options. The first class regattas are scheduled to take place with the boat in the second half of 2018. However, a detailed price list for the Quant 17 is not yet available. Michi Aeppli gave an initial price estimate of around 24,000 euros (net) at the trade fair.
