Attention blue water sailors with a penchant for challenging routes. With its new Global Exp 68 model, the family-run Brazilian shipyard MCP presents a robust motorsailer for worldwide cruising, which is welded from aluminium in Guarujá. The 20.80 metre long and 3.3 million euro motorsailer recently celebrated its world premiere, and four units of the robust 45-tonne vessel have already been sold.

The family business, run by Damien and Manoel Chaves, has been building aluminium sailing and motor yachts in eastern Brazil for over four decades. "Our yachts cruise the seas from southern latitudes such as Ushuaia and Antarctica to the warm regions of the Brazilian coast and the Mediterranean," explains Damien Chaves.

Shipyard's own design

The hull of the Global Exp 68 is welded from aluminium, while the massive superstructure is laminated from GRP sandwich for weight reasons. The design of the cutter-rigged motor sailer was created on the computers of the two shipyard bosses, who countered the Sparcraft aluminium rig with 222 square metres of upwind sail area with a nine-tonne hydraulic swivel keel. This reduces the draught from 4.15 to 2.05 metres at the touch of a button. The keel was designed in such a way that it gives way and swivels into the hull when grounded.

Plenty of protection in the Doghouse

A key feature of the Global Exp 68 is the comprehensive protection offered by the solid, high superstructure for the large centre cockpit, deck saloon and wheelhouse. The doghouse with negative windscreen provides optimum protection for the cockpit and steering position and offers a perfect overview thanks to the large windows. All halyards, sheets and trim lines are led directly to the helmsman's working area.

Raised saloon and second helm position

Cosy sailing in unfavourable weather conditions - that's what the Global Exp 68 was designed for. A second helm station is integrated at the very front of the raised saloon, with control of the autopilot, engine, bow thruster and anchor winch. This means that even the most extreme expeditions can be completed in comfort.

Exciting layout

In addition to the full-beam owner's cabin in the stern and the VIP suite in the bow, the double guest cabins also offer plenty of privacy, as they are each accessible from the saloon via their own companionways. The owner can look forward to a king-size bed, an office alcove, plenty of storage space, a sofa and a generously proportioned bathroom. The space for the large guest cabins amidships is created by the raised saloon and they offer double beds, folding sofas, plenty of storage space and a private bathroom. At the very front of the bow, the VIP suite offers so much space that it would also pass for an owner's cabin. From this cabin, the owner or his guests also have access to the technical area in the bow, which also houses a workshop.

Technical areas

Watertight aluminium bulkheads surround a walk-in engine room with standing height, which houses a Yanmar engine, a Kohler generator, water treatment systems and hydraulic units. There is also an electronics compartment that you would expect to find on a superyacht. An area with controlled ventilation reserved for navigation electronics, battery chargers and monitoring systems. The aim is to ensure an ideal environment for storing the most sensitive equipment.

Tender garage with lift

In addition to four large cabins, the voluminous hull at the rear offers space for a tender garage. The striking "roll bar" at the stern houses a hydraulic crane for moving the tender.

Adventure as a niche

There are several comparable yachts on the market, but the Global Exp 68 will probably be most similar to the ten-foot shorter Puffin 58 Explorer with lines by Olivier van Meer or the 12.30 metre long Ovni 430.
