The sailing-mad showmaster, who also enjoyed acting in films with a maritime theme, and his "Marius IV" were a well-known duo on the North Sea and Baltic coasts.
When he was repeatedly asked why he had no less than three masts on his ship, Kulenkampff always replied: "Because I couldn't fit four." Three masts on a 15.50 metre long ship is indeed a lot; however, the idea dates back to a time when sophisticated deck hardware for handling large sail areas by a small crew had yet to be invented. At that time, a strong emphasis was placed on dividing the wardrobe.
But today's "Langlütjen", owned by Jens Torsten Bausch from Bremen, is also worth a visit. The ship, which shines in new splendour, shows how people sailed and lived on board in the seventies.
