Paul Cayard is Rolex Yachtsman of the Year 2025. At this year's HSS Classic Yacht Symposium in Helsinki, the American sailing star and newly crowned world champion will speak about the international Star class - a boat class that has fascinated top sailors worldwide since 1911. With his presentation, Cayard joins a renowned line-up of speakers who characterise the meeting of classic yacht enthusiasts.

Preserving historic yachts is much more than a hobby for classic yacht fans around the world - for many, it is a life's work. On 28 March 2026, this scene will come together for the 13th time in Helsinki, Finland, for the HSS Classic Yacht Symposium together. The keynote speaker will be Paul Cayard, who was named Rolex Yachtsman of the Year 2025 on 12 February.

Leading forum for classic yachts

Since its inception in 2011, the event has developed into one of the leading international forums for classic yachts. Supported by the City of Helsinki and the Finnish Sailing Association, the symposium attracts participants from all over Europe, Australia and North America.

High-calibre speakers at the Classic Yacht Symposium

The 13th edition of the symposium will feature an international line-up of renowned speakers. Paul Cayard talks about "The Timeless Appeal of the International Star Class" and sheds light on the enduring relevance of the keelboat class designed in 1911, in which he became world champion in 2025 together with the German star sailor Frithjof Kleen.

The American sailor has had an impressive career: seven America's Cup campaigns, victory in the 1997/98 Whitbread Round the World Race, two Olympic Games and eight world championship titles. As President of the International Star Class Association, he is committed to promoting classic boat classes.

From ocean racing to classic yacht designs

Cayard will be joined by other experts: Peter Shipway from Australia with 31 Sydney-Hobart participations talks about his experiences from decades of ocean racing. Dr William Collier from Scotland, yacht historian and owner of the legendary design office G.L. Watson Ltd, sheds light on the history of classic yacht construction. Bobby Cyrus from Sweden is recognised as an authority on Nordic yacht building and traditional wooden boat construction.
