The German translation of the event is "Quer durch das Inselmeer" and the name more or less says it all. It is modelled on the long-successful "Öresund På Langs" format, which has been bringing together traditionally built vessels of various sizes for a number of years. From 4 to 6 July, the participating boats will sail the course from Faaborg via Ærøskøbing to Svendborg and can take part in a competition.
The event is aimed at classic yachts and dinghies as well as former and replica workboats of all types and sizes. The participants are divided into four classes: Cruising boats, Regatta boats, Working craft and Smakke dinghies. The organisers deliberately want to promote a varied picture on the water. This has already been confirmed by the high level of interest. Over 20 boats have already been registered for the debut of "Øhavet På Tværs".
The starting signal for "Øhavet På Tværs" will be given on Friday, 4 July, off Faaborg, after the fleet has gathered in the harbour of the old seafaring town in the previous days. The first stage leads to Ærøskøbing. There the participants will moor in front of the historic old shipyard. On Saturday morning, they will continue on to Svendborg, where the race will conclude with an evening buffet and award ceremony.
"Øhavet På Tværs" is a co-operation between the Danmarks Museum for Lystsejlads (Danish Museum of Sailing) in Svendborg and the Dansk Forening for Ældre Lystfartøjer (DFÆL, Danish Association for Older Leisure Boats). Jan Jay Brun Jensen from the Sailing Museum explains how it came about: "We received a request from DFÆL to hold their summer meeting in Svendborg. This gave rise to the idea for 'Öhavet På Tværs'." The event is financially supported by Svendborg Event and the three participating harbours, which makes participation free of charge for the sailors.
