Industry leader Lagoon announces a 42-foot model. The ship is to be presented at the trade fair in Düsseldorf as a world first

The long-running Lagoon 421 (formerly 420) has had its day - now comes the successor model Lagoon 42. The design office Van Peteghem/Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) has also been awarded the contract for the new ship from the Bordeaux-based catamaran builders. For the French, VPLP's good name and success in ocean racing guarantee good sailing characteristics and high performance potential.

As with the Lagoon 39 and Lagoon 52, the mast of the 42 is positioned extremely far back - an unconventional and visually strange arrangement. The advantages according to the concept: the foresail triangle is significantly larger compared to conventional catamaran concepts, making the self-tacking jib practical. And the main boom is shorter. This makes the mainsail higher and slimmer. With the same performance, the handling when trimming is better and less power-intensive. This rig concept has already proven itself in the Lagoon 39 and 52 double test (YACHT 12/2013).

The steering position on the Lagoon 42 is raised to the side of the cabin bulkhead. To ensure safe and protected steering even in rough conditions, the helm station can be closed off to the outside with a moulded section - a good idea. The working cockpit is also covered with a fixed bimini.

42 feet is an exciting size for cruising catamarans because it is interesting for both the charter market and owners. Its dimensions allow it to be fitted out with four cabins, each with its own sanitary facilities in reasonable dimensions. In the new Lagoon 42, the range of toilet facilities is now even supplemented by a separate shower compartment.

On the previous Lagoon 421 model, the forward cabins were installed transversely and under the platform. On the new ship, the double berth in the foredeck is now once again arranged lengthways and accessible from the side. In line with the standard and proven catamaran concept, one of the two hulls can also be used as a separate owner's cabin with the bathroom in the foredeck. However, the concept does not provide for a two-cabin version like the Lagoon 39.

Lagoon Catamarans will be presenting the new 42 as a world premiere at the boot trade fair in Düsseldorf in January 2016. We can look forward to it. There is also already an initial price estimate: the basic model will cost 340,340 euros (incl. 19 per cent VAT, incl. sails) at market launch.
