Just four years ago, in the spring of 2008, the French launched the Orana 44 (test in YACHT 18/2008), a new addition to the medium-sized segment. The big innovation back then: the fixed and accessible bimini roof as sun protection over the guest cockpit and a useful platform for hoisting and lowering the mainsail. This feature has since become the standard for cruising catamarans of almost any size.
However, the fixed canopy not only provides shade, but also lends itself to additional uses. For example, with a flybridge as a raised steering position or as a sunbathing bench for sun-seekers. The two or three-storey living and leisure concept is now also a trend for cruising catamarans
The new Hélia 44 combines the advantages. As with the Orana 44, the helm station is mounted on the side at a raised level. The helmsman has a full overview here, even when manoeuvring in the harbour under engine, and works at least partially protected in wind and weather. A new feature is that the steering column is now mounted at a distance from the actual cabin superstructure. This makes it easier to reach the winches for the sheets and halyards on the roof. A real lounge area with a sunbed and sunbathing area has been raised again.
For the living area, the Hélia 44 adopts the layout of its predecessor model, the Orana 44. In the charter-orientated "Quatuor" version, the two hulls offer a symmetrical layout with four double cabins, each with its own bathroom and shower area. In the "Maestro" owner's version, the starboard hull is designed as a large living area with a spacious double bed, huge bathroom and separate shower area.
The design of the Hélia 44 comes from the Berret/Racoupeau studio. The boat is to be presented at the upcoming Inwater Boat Shows 2012 (Salon Nautique, Cannes & Grand Pavois, La Rochelle). However, the shipyard has not yet announced the price.
