A course for wanderlust. The couple have sailed the tropics and the high latitudes with their Ovni 41. But there are still new destinations to discover
After 33 years on the high seas, Doris Renoldner and Wolfgang Slanec report on their life between extremes and on recipes for success in long-distance sailing, now available as a PDF download

Doris Renoldner and Wolfgang Slanec, known as Wolf, lead a life between home and far away, between life on board and life on land. The Austrians have sailed around the world twice, on the Barefoot Route and around Cape Horn, 15 years in total. They travelled to dozens of countries and logged thousands and thousands of nautical miles. And they didn't stop there.

With their Ovni 41 "Nomad", the two set off again from the Mediterranean in 2012 to travel the world. After years in the tropics, they are now tempted by the high latitudes. They will sail via Newfoundland and Labrador to Greenland and finally through the Northwest Passage via Alaska to the Pacific. Not non-stop, but in stages. In the meantime, they return to Austria, where the two have become better known as "sea nomads" than almost any other pair of circumnavigators.

Reports to cheer and dream about

At home in Europe, they give lectures that finance their travels. Hundreds of times over the past 33 years, they have made audiences dream, marvel and sail away during breaks from travelling. But due to the pandemic, all of this had to be cancelled recently.

They were finally able to show their latest show about the crossing of the Northwest Passage for the first time in Germany in February 2022. YACHT was there and met the circumnavigators on this occasion. The big interview with Doris Renoldner and Wolfgang Slanec appears in the new YACHT 9/2022, which is available in stores now.

The voyages of the "sea nomads"

The starting point for both circumnavigations was Croatia. From there, the first took the barefoot route through the Panama and Suez Canal (blue line), the second round Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope (green line). The current long voyage began with an Atlantic crossing, followed by Newfoundland, Greenland and finally the Northwest Passage into the Pacific (red line). The voyage is scheduled to continue there in spring 2022.
