About halfway between Scotland and Iceland lie the Faroe Islands - wild, rugged and unspoilt. A German long-distance traveller couple explored them. Download the report in PDF format

Anke and Uwe Müntz have travelled a long way, with unusual destinations and stages. Starting in Germany, they first sailed northwards via Norway, Scotland and the Faroe Islands to Iceland. And then southwards, including to France, Portugal and Morocco. All this with their "FreiKerl", a Reinke 12M.

They now report on their visit to the Faroe Islands in YACHT. They actually only wanted to make a stopover on the remote islands on their way to Iceland. But it turned into something more and they stayed longer.

The islands, their people and animals, the rugged landscapes characterised by the Atlantic - all of this quickly captivated the sailors. Even if one or two things were disconcerting, such as the brutal slaughter of entire herds of pilot whales, which the two involuntarily witnessed during their stay. But then there were the impressive cliffs, the lush greenery that covers everything, even the houses, and the odd friendship that developed.

Anke and Uwe Müntz took their time, immersed themselves in this strange world, explored it - also with the help of a local captain, who took them on his old sailing boat to places in the archipelago that are not usually visited by sailors travelling through. They experienced concerts in deep, dark rock caves, discovered abandoned settlements and marvelled at sheep that had been ruffled by the wind.

Anke and Uwe Müntz have recorded their impressions of all this and more, in words and pictures. They have written a book about their trip ("Blau gemacht", Mitteldeutscher Verlag, 28 euros) and a chapter about the Faroe Islands, published in YACHT. The yacht, issue 7/2022, is available as a digital edition in the YACHT app and can be ordered directly here. Or you can download the report directly via the link below.
