Knot-tying – no prior knowledge is required, but those who have already mastered the bowline and clove hitch will find it a little easier. Please have two lines, each 1–2 metres long, to hand so that you can practise the knots and their applications as they are demonstrated: The bowline, friction knot, loop knot, thickening knot, safety knot, lashing knot and many more will be demonstrated and explained on board, with reference to their specific uses.
Knots and lashing – How to tie a knot that holds securely and looks perfect. Make sure you have some rope and a suitable sewing needle to hand. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’re all set.
The eye splice in braided rope rounds off your knowledge and is part of the repertoire of any competent skipper, enabling them to fit mooring lines, fender lines, buoy straps etc. with neat eyes or thimbles. Have a short, three-strand braided line to hand so you can join in straight away.

A trained boatbuilder, sailor and successful author published by Delius Klasing Verlag, he is renowned for his books “Knots and Splices” and “Splicing modern ropes” as well as through numerous seminars and workshops as Germany’s best-known rope-making and splicing expert. He has been carrying out professional splicing work for yachts, as well as for industry and the military, for over 30 years. As a commercial yachtmaster and boat owner, he has more than four decades of sailing experience, including several Atlantic crossings and extreme voyages in small boats.
