Used correctly, a radar can see further and more clearly than the skipper’s eyes. It constantly monitors the area behind the sails and can warn of potential collisions, even if the other vessel does not have an AIS transmitter on board. Radar also detects gusts of wind and can therefore help with the decision to reef the sails. No wonder, then, that professionals often leave the device running even when visibility is good.
Operating a radar device is a skill that has to be learnt. Only with practice can you judge what a radar detects and what it doesn’t — and what it displays even though there is actually nothing there.
Both the basic settings of the device and the latest features of modern radar systems are explained. How has the technology developed in recent years? What is genuinely useful, and what is merely a gimmick? Using screenshots and real video footage taken whilst sailing in fog, the whole process is demonstrated and explained in a practical way. Radar navigation is an art and extremely rewarding once you’ve mastered it. Much like a doctor who can look inside our bodies by examining an ultrasound or X-ray image.
Anyone who feels inspired by the 1.5-hour webinar to find out more about radar and electronic navigation is welcome to 3-day RYA Radar Course consider visiting Malta in February and March. The webinar provides an excellent basis for this.
