When used properly, a radar can see better and further than the skipper’s eyes. A radar constantly monitors the area behind the sails and can warn of potential collisions, even if the other vessel does not have an AIS transmitter. The radar warns of gusts of wind and can therefore help you decide whether to reef the sails. No wonder, then, that professionals often leave the radar running even when visibility is good.

However, operating a radar device requires practice in order to understand: what can a radar detect, what cannot it detect, and what does it detect even though it isn’t actually there?

The course covers both the basic settings of the device and the latest features of modern radar equipment. How has the technology developed in recent years? What is useful, and what is just a gimmick? Screenshots and real video footage, captured whilst sailing in fog, will be demonstrated and analysed in a practical context. Radar navigation is an art and deeply satisfying once you have mastered it. Much like a doctor who can see inside our bodies by examining an ultrasound or X-ray image.

NOTE If you are unable to attend the webinar on the scheduled date, you can also Participants who were “unable to attend” can watch the recording of the webinar (though limited to four weeks) watch it again.
