This webinar series is all about reading the weather and assessing it correctly. Whether it’s a prolonged spell of high pressure or a succession of low-pressure systems, the weather can have a massive impact on your sailing holiday. But how can I correctly identify weather patterns, and if the weather does turn nasty, how and where can I spot the dangers in good time? Sebastian Wache, an experienced qualified meteorologist and weather router, will explain this to you.

Webinar content:

Both sections cover the following content:

  • An introduction to weather, including a brief overview of the basics
  • Recognising weather patterns
  • plan for the short and long term, taking the weather into account
  • Identifying and assessing weather hazards
  • Choosing a route based on the weather

In the first part of the webinar, we’ll be discussing the basics of the weather. What actually happens in the atmosphere that determines whether we get perfect sailing weather or not? What makes the weather what it is? As well as temperature, pressure and wind, Sebastian Wache explains how high-pressure and low-pressure systems form, how they move, and how you can easily understand these patterns – even with just a little knowledge of the weather – and use that understanding to plan ahead. The first part is therefore all about laying the foundations so that you can feel confident about the weather.

In the second part, we’ll build on the foundations laid in the first part. Here, we’ll move on to route planning. What options are available? How can I best use my knowledge of the weather to prepare for my next sailing trip? What do polar diagrams mean, and which software or app can best be used, and how? This will be an interactive seminar where no question will be left unanswered. We’ll run through various weather scenarios and routing options.

Sebastian Wache (41), a qualified meteorologist, studied meteorology and oceanography at Geomar in Kiel. However, he has been working at WetterWelt GmbH since 2006. In this role, he not only provides weather information to the media (NDR Schleswig-Holstein Magazin), but also guides sailors safely across the world’s oceans. As well as recreational sailors, sailors such as Lennart Burke, Melwin Fink, Sanni Beucke and Boris Herrmann also book his services to ensure optimal weather preparation ahead of regattas. As well as clocking up many virtual nautical miles whilst planning routes, this passionate sailor accumulates plenty of them himself in his spare time on his maxi yacht. He thus combines meteorological expertise with sailing experience. As a private lecturer at the university and a public speaker, he knows how to convey this knowledge in a way that is tailored to his audience.
