Greece is arguably the most unspoilt sailing destination in the Mediterranean. No overpriced marinas, no rip-off buoy fields, no restaurants with exorbitant prices, no scramble for a berth in the early afternoon. Instead, island-hopping at its very best, often very steady sailing winds, incredibly friendly locals and picture-perfect towns, as well as cultural highlights along many of the routes.
For some crews, it’s certain islands they’ve heard of that draw them in: Santorini with its spectacular town perched on the crater rim of the ancient volcano, Mykonos’s ‘Little Venice’ with its row of houses and windmills against the sunset, and the idyllic fishing village of Naoussa on Paros. The list could go on almost indefinitely, whether crews want to sail in the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, the Sporades or the Saronic and Argolic Gulfs.
However, Greece also has its own rules: in the height of summer, the Meltemi can blow with considerable force at times, requiring careful trip planning and good seamanship. In the harbours, there are often no mooring lines, let alone harbour staff to help with mooring. The harbour infrastructure is sometimes basic. Anyone planning to sail there for the first time would benefit from thorough trip preparation and careful route selection.
That’s exactly what the former YACHT travel editor wants Andreas Fritsch He will be sharing this with you in this webinar. He headed up the travel and charter section at YACHT magazine, has been sailing in the Aegean for 25 years, and is the author of a guide to sailing in Greece.
