In this webinar, yachting expert and navigation specialist Sven M. Rutter explains key concepts for the safe and practical use of modern chartplotters – regardless of the manufacturer or model. The focus is not on individual menus or operating procedures, but on understanding the navigation data displayed and how to make effective use of it in practice.
Among other things, the following topics are covered and explained using practical examples:
- What information does a modern chartplotter provide – and how should it be interpreted?
- In practice, what are the advantages of planning a route in advance compared with simply ‘letting the device guide you’?
- What do abbreviations such as BRG, SOG, DTK, XTE, ETA and TTG stand for?
- How do HDG, COG, BRG and DTK differ – and what can be inferred from these differences?
- What should you bear in mind when working with standard electronic nautical charts?
- What are the technical limitations, for example with regard to the auto-routing function?
- Common mistakes and useful plausibility checks – and why even the most advanced technology cannot replace a sound grounding in the fundamentals of navigation
