Whilst smartphones on board are certainly handy, they are no substitute for VHF marine radio. In an emergency, in particular, it is the only way to alert both the maritime rescue co-ordination centre and nearby vessels at the same time. Radio is also often indispensable in the event of technical problems, when enquiring about mooring spaces, and when coordinating with other vessels, locks or bridges.
