With around 2,200 nautical miles to go, Boris Herrmann is only just under 100 nautical miles away from the leading Charlie Dalin ("Apivia"). The forecast is seven days to the finish. Herrmann would therefore have to make up around 14 nautical miles per day, all very roughly calculated. Given the condition of the boat and skipper, this does not seem impossible, as we have reported several times.
But the last week of racing still has a lot in store, including many gybes on the way north. So there are also many opportunities to make a mistake in a manoeuvre and destroy the material or to push the boat too hard overall, which could also lead to breakage.
A difficult decision for Herrmann. On the one hand, an almost certain podium place beckons, even victory seems possible. That would be a sensation. On the other hand, his goal has always been to finish the race first and foremost. He is the first German participant and would not only immortalise himself in German sailing history by simply reaching the finish line.
So all or nothing? Or would you rather have a bird in the hand than a pigeon on the roof?
How do you think Boris should behave in the final week of the race?
