He is the talk of the town and is sailing the race of his life in the Vendée Globe: Hamburg skipper Boris Herrmann is the German star of the solo regatta around the world. The "Seaexplorer - Yacht Club de Monaco" skipper has already celebrated the mountain festival. From now on, every nautical mile will bring him closer to the start and finish harbour of Les Sables-d'Olonne. His current position among the top five boats, he says, is something he had hoped for, even if he never announced it in public. "I've always dreamed of the top five. I told my coach: 'I'm going to finish seventh around Cape Horn and then get a place in the top five'." Herrmann is currently even ahead of this plan.
At the same time, the 39-year-old family man knows: "Half the race is still ahead of us and a lot can happen. The big challenge is still getting there. My biggest Christmas wish is that nothing swims in front of my bow from now until the finish line and that everything stays intact." After 42 days at sea and around two weeks before the Cape Horn Passage, Herrmann was in fourth place overall on the morning of 4 Advent, around 200 nautical miles behind third-placed Thomas Ruyant, and was an active participant in the jibe slalom of the leading group around the 55th parallel south near the ice limit drawn by the race committee.
The 39-year-old father of a family recently spoke about his experiences with author Timm Kruse, who presents the great adventures and adventurers of our time in the Delius Klasing publishing podcast. Author and globetrotter Kruse regularly talks to his guests about unforgettable moments and the desire to hit the road. The podcast episodes are about the urge to break out and the ability to put experiences into words. Boris Herrmann masters both disciplines very well, as can be heard in the podcast, in which he talks about his race, letting go and small and big encounters and adventures at sea.
If you would like to find out more about Herrmann's talents and read about his life and sailing stations, you can do so today on 4 Advent (20 December 2020) at Delius Klasing via Instagram win a copy of his book "Nonstop - Addicted to Sailing" signed by Herrmann.
Four days before Christmas Eve, Boris Herrmann's wife Birte, who is spending Christmas with their daughter Marie-Louise at her parents' home in Kiel, sent a very warm Advent greeting for her husband Boris Herrmann. She captured a piece of home for her husband, which has already reached the solo circumnavigator in the South Pacific via WhatsApp. YACHT online wishes all readers a happy 4th Advent!
