The British group Sunsail is following the trend of opening up more and more sailing areas around the world for charter customers with its first base in South Africa.
While the country on the Cape of Good Hope was previously considered a destination for blue water sailors, this could now change. The base in Langebaan, on the Atlantic side of South Africa and around one and a half hours (120 kilometres) north of Cape Town, will open in November this year. The harbour is to be located in a quiet holiday resort known for its large lagoon in the West Coast National Park. It is known for its blooming flora in spring and abundant wildlife.
Océanis yachts (381, 461) and Bahia 46 catamarans are available at the base. The yachts can be chartered bareboat or with crew.
The area around the southern tip of the continent is generally regarded as challenging; its location on the edge of the Southern Ocean means that the region sometimes experiences strong winds and heavy seas. Nevertheless, there are numerous bays (False Bay, Hout Bay, etc.) that are safe and also have marinas. Undoubtedly not necessarily an area for beginners - but an attractive destination for experienced crews to discover new sailing territory. Information about all Sunsail agencies.
