The "Freydis" in Alaska
Heide and Erich Wilts will also be cruising the coastal waters of the northernmost US state next summer with their "Freydis"

The long-distance couple have barely returned from this year's sailing trip, which most recently took them to Alaska, when they announce their sailing plans for next year: once again they will be sailing from Kodiak to the most beautiful bays and harbours along the coasts of the Gulf of Alaska.

Erich Wilts writes in his latest report:

We spent six months travelling this year. Exciting times lie behind us. First the typhoon-filled trips in Japan, then the trip to the Aleutian Islands, the toughest since we set off from Leer with 1200 nautical miles of crossings. And finally the trip from Dutch Harbour to Kodiak - the most adventurous and most beautiful in recent years, with a super nice crew.

After four years of travelling, we have arrived at our dream destination with the new "Freydis": Alaska. For four summers, from 2006 to 2009, we sailed in this area, which could not be more exciting and beautiful: lonely, pristine, wild, rugged, characterised by volcanoes, mountains and their glaciers calving into the fjords. The beauty of this island maze is as great as its size. One lifetime of sailing is not enough to get to know all the many bays and anchorages along this coast.

We are fascinated by the alternation between lonely anchor bays in total wilderness, small fishing settlements and Eskimo villages on our cruises in the Gulf. In 2016, we will visit the salmon waters around Kodiak, the largest island in Alaska. The bear coves in the southern part of Katmai National Park at the foot of snow-capped, smoking volcanoes. The glacier fjords of the Kenai Peninsula and the fjord and island world of the famous Prince William Sound, into which the glaciers of the Chugach Mountains flow, the most heavily glaciated region in Alaska.
