At most, many sailors take care of the contents of the medicine cabinet on board during the season. If at all. In some cases, a car first-aid kit is simply packed on board. Not ideal, but at least it's something. But there is a better way.
Putting together a first-aid kit for your next sailing trip involves a manageable amount of effort. On the one hand, the contents depend on your fellow sailors. For example, do some suffer from allergies, are they prone to seasickness or skin irritations?
The sailing area is also a decisive factor. Do you need to take insect repellent with you on the trip or even medication for malaria prophylaxis, for example on a trip in Asian waters?
In addition to these special needs, there is also a kind of basic equipment that should always be available below deck. For example, wound treatment products and much more.
In the new issue of YACHT (issue 16/09, on newsstands from Wednesday), we list how best to equip an on-board pharmacy. We also provide contact addresses for authorities, doctors and institutions where sailors can obtain specialised medical advice.
