Crete has enjoyed great popularity among German package holidaymakers for decades, but among yachties, Greece's largest island in the south of the Aegean is usually not a big topic. The main reason for this is the high mountains that run through Crete from west to east. In summer, the Meltemi wind blows down from them in many places with gale force, making the south coast unsafe. A region therefore more for Aegean connoisseurs.
YACHT reader Peter Osenberg therefore mainly explored the area in the low season. He sailed almost completely around the island and found a very unspoilt Greece. There are hardly any other crews on the island, there are beautiful anchorages away from the tourist resorts and more good harbours than you might initially expect when looking at the map. However, the gusts of wind that we encountered also hit the crew a few times.
