Greece: Big sailing tour around RhodesPhoto: YACHT / A. Fritsch

The islands in the southern Dodecanese are only visited by a few charter yachts. There are also beautiful harbours and bays there

The trip will take us to Kassos and Karpathos. The islands lie around 30 nautical miles off the south-west corner of Rhodes. Yachties rarely stray there, and the sailing guides don't provide much information either.

So YACHT editor Andreas Fritsch sets off. From Marmaris, the first stop is Mandraki, the island metropolis in the north-east of Rhodes. We continue along the south coast, stopping in Anthony Quinn Bay and in front of the picturesque town of Lindos.

And then Kassos and Karpathos should follow. But this turns out to be unexpectedly difficult in practice. The weather simply doesn't want to play ball, a heavy storm is on the horizon. How the story ends, which anchorages, bays and harbours are worth a stopover on Rhodes and the neighbouring islands, is not clear.can now be read in the new YACHT (issue 18/2012, available from newsagents now).
