Anyone who has ever travelled by sailing yacht in the Cyclades or along the Turkish coast in July and August usually knows a thing or two about the Meltemi. The strong summer wind often blows at 6 to 7 Beaufort from the north-east. This is not a problem for space-sheet courses - but on the way back to the charter base at the latest, many a crew has cursed the upwind course associated with it.
Even in the Aegean you can sail in a very relaxed manner, you just have to dodge a little into the "fringes" of the Meltemi. For example, in the Gulf of Volos and the neighbouring Northern Sporades. Not only is the breeze much weaker there, the bays and harbours are also much less frequented than in many other sailing centres further south.
