The beautiful old town of La Rochelles with its historic harbour and many marinas is an ideal starting point for cruises to the three offshore islands of Ile de Ré, Ile d'Oléron and Ile d'Aix.

There are only a few miles between most destinations - ideal for slowly familiarising yourself with sailing in tidal areas. Some of the islands outside offer several small harbours, the towns there are a destination for local sailors in summer, there are beautiful markets, white beaches, excellent restaurants and bars.

The area is well buoyed and the current almost never exceeds two knots, making the region one of the easier Atlantic destinations. Crews who want to extend their cruising radius can also sail as far as Bordeaux or the Arcachon dunes.

YACHT explored how the area presents itself in the middle of the vibrant French summer. The detailed trip report is available in YACHT, No. 5/2018, in the DK shop. Or you can download the report directly via the link below
