Flakfortet open again
A storm of protest among sailors has prompted the Danish museum authorities to relax the restrictions for this year. The long-term future is uncertain

The old fortress island directly in front of Copenhagen is a very isolated, but also popular and special stop for sailors. The site once served as protection against Swedish invaders and lies between the two countries in the Öresund. In recent years, the operators have used the listed fort as a harbour with sanitary facilities and a restaurant with an event hall and have invested considerable sums in maintaining the site, which had fallen into serious disrepair when they took it over.

However, it appears that the work was not necessarily carried out as the museum administration Slots- og Kulturstyrelsen would have wished, because a few weeks ago, officials banned the harbour from operating in accordance with a new law on the preservation of historical monuments. This caused a storm of indignation among sailors on social media, which has apparently now led to an agreement. According to the operators, Flakfortet can be used again with immediate effect and the dismantling of the sanitary facilities has been postponed. However, the long-term preservation of the harbour is not yet assured and there are still "major challenges" for the future, according to the operators.
