Vordingborg's southern harbour can no longer be accessed via Masnedsund. The 78-year-old bascule bridge in the south of the island of Zealand will remain permanently closed until it is rebuilt in 2020. It only has a clearance height of 4.80 metres. From now on, sailors coming from the Småland fairway to the southern harbour will have to pass through the Storstrøm Bridge and pass the island of Masnedø to the south. A new fairway has already been established across the eastern shallows. The buoyed channel between Kalve- and Færgestrøm has a depth of five metres and is 45 metres wide.
The bridge closure is related to the modernisation of the railway lines for the Fehmarn-Belt fixed link. A new bridge is to be built over the Masnedsund by 2020.
