Marina Gaviota Varadero is located on the north-west side of Cuba and is the largest facility of its kind with around 1000 berths. From there, it is only around 90 miles, about a two-hour transfer, to Havana. The harbour is part of a large project with a 5-star resort, holiday flats, service companies, restaurants and shops. It is already in operation and offers a 100-tonne travel lift as well as technical services for boats. The harbour is also a Port of Entry, and all authorities for entry are on site.
The marina is one of the few facilities on the north coast of Cuba from where the USA is less than a day's sail away. If a charter base were to be established on the north coast, this would be new territory for sailors, as there are currently only centres on the south coast of the island. Cuba is still regarded as one of the most backward, but also most unspoilt Caribbean destinations.
