The Isles of Scilly: the wayward beauties
It’s not easy to get to the Isles of Scilly. But it’s well worth the effort. Anyone who makes it there will be richly rewarded. The report is available as a PDF download
They aren’t far away. The Isles of Scilly lie just 20 nautical miles or so south-west of Land’s End, the south-western tip of Cornwall. And yet this archipelago – consisting mainly of around 140 islets and rocks, as well as five larger, inhabited islands – has plenty to offer.
Strong westerly winds usually prevent one from setting a course for the islands. And even if one does manage to reach them thanks to persistently calm weather, there is virtually no sheltered anchorage to be found once there – let alone a harbour. The channels between the islands are also riddled with shoals. These once proved the undoing of the English fleet.
And yet everyone who has ever been there raves about the Isles of Scilly. Exotic. Secluded. Charming through and through. YACHT writer Leon Schulz has visited them.
