In this special on sustainability in sailing, we take an in-depth look at the industry. Which shipyards and manufacturers are already thinking and acting green? What can sailors do to combat climate change?

The drastic consequences of climate change can no longer be denied, and the topic of sustainability can be found at every turn, including in boatbuilding. There has not been a press conference in recent years in which shipyards, suppliers or regatta syndicates have not shared their ecological commitment with us. But the interest of sailors themselves in environmental issues, especially marine conservation, has also increased significantly. The editors notice this in the reactions and letters they receive.

For this reason, YACHT is devoting this special to precisely this topic.

For example, do you know what the carbon footprint of a sailing yacht is, even compared to a motorboat? You can find out how green a sailing boat really is in the extensively researched CO2 balance.

An equally exciting question is where shipyards and boat builders currently stand in terms of green tech. This much in advance: the industry is on the right track, and the range of measures leading to more environmentally friendly boatbuilding is extremely colourful. There is no one perfect solution, there are hundreds of good approaches that all go in the same direction.

As sailors, we can also do a lot ourselves to minimise our carbon footprint. This won't solve the world's climate problems, but every small step we take brings us a little further forward. Don't worry, we don't want to take the fun out of sailing and our favourite hobby for you (or for us!). Rather, we want to inform and inspire. Our blue playground can use all the help it can get, and only together can we bring about positive change.
