An online seminar organised by the deep-sea sailing association Trans-Ocean e. V. (TO) is therefore intended to provide the necessary knowledge on the subject of "Safety on long voyages" with regard to piracy and crime at sea.
As part of the association's successful microseminar series, Chief Superintendent Jörg Flackus from the Federal Police Sea Piracy Prevention Centre in Neustadt will answer questions on the topic. In addition to simple burglary protection on board, he will also discuss how to deal with sudden crisis situations abroad.
The choice of the best routes around the world, taking into account the current geopolitical situation, will be discussed, as well as an overview of current high-risk areas for piracy. Participants will learn where they can obtain information about current incidents and what defence options are available. But also: What should be considered when encountering refugee boats?
The event will be moderated by long-distance sailors and TO members Bert Frisch and Hinnerk Weiler.
The seminar will take place virtually via Zoom this Wednesday evening. It will start at 7pm and the room will be open from 6.30pm. The end is scheduled for 9 pm. Both Trans-Ocean members and non-members are invited. Participation is free of charge for anyone who would like to attend. It is necessary to register in advance with the Trans-Ocean office by e-mail to seminar@trans-ocean.org.
In the past, the German Federal Police has also offered the seminar on safety on long-distance voyages as a face-to-face event. Here too, the focus was on preparing preventive measures for a circumnavigation, sensitising crews to potential dangers and the associated psychological stress. YACHT author Marc Bielefeld took part in the workshop in order to be prepared for an emergency at sea. You can read his report here.
