Norway: Sailing under our own steam to university in Trondheim and to the Lofoten Islands

Their journey takes them across the Skagerrak to Trondheim, where their boat, the “Lilja”, becomes their floating home for several months – a life divided between lecture theatres, freezing nights and everyday life on board. When the semester ends, perhaps the most spectacular part of her journey begins: the sailing trip along the Norwegian coast up to the archipelago of the Lofoten Islands – with long summer days, stunning landscapes and unforgettable moments at sea.

  The first section recounts the journey to Norway. The route takes her across the North Sea and the Skagerrak to Trondheim, where the adventure of a ‘semester abroad under her own steam’ begins. Hannah recounts the preparations, weather-related delays and her first experiences of sailing solo.
• Part 2: Between the lecture theatre and freezing nights on board
  What is it like to live on a small sailing boat during the Norwegian winter? This second instalment follows daily life during the semester: lectures, life on board, darkness, snow and temperatures well below freezing. A story about an unusual student life, improvisation and the fascination of the Nordic winter.
• Part 3: The Lofoten Islands – Sailing under the midnight sun
  Once the exams are over, we cast off again. The journey continues along the Norwegian coast to the spectacular archipelago of the Lofoten Islands. The midnight sun, rugged mountains, secluded anchorages and challenging navigation form the highlight of the trip.
