YACHT 25/2024: Inspiration for the coming seasonPhoto: YACHT/N.Krauss
How can wood and high-tech boat building be cleverly combined? What characterises the new Saare 47? Which radar models are also worth considering for normal cruising sailors? What will happen to the munitions left over from World War II in the North and Baltic Seas and how dangerous are they? And: Do you already have plans for next year? If not, we have a few tips for you.

It's that time of year again: it's getting cold, grey and foggy outside. For most sailors, winter is a dreary, boatless time of year, characterised by the memories of a hopefully successful season.

I can't help but think of the children's book "Frederick" by Leo Lionni: Frederick, the little field mouse, has spent the whole summer carefully and devotedly collecting beautiful memories, sunbeams and bright colours to give her and her friends warmth and joy in the cold winter.

Great sailing tips in the charter special

Even better than looking into the past is looking ahead - to all the voyages that will sweeten our hours on board next year. In our charter special, we take you to five very different areas that can be explored even on a tight time budget.

But is it even worth hiring a boat for just one week? We can answer this question with a resounding yes. In addition to a wonderful report on "Mallorca's little sister" Menorca, we provide ideas for cruises in the Adriatic, Aegean, Caribbean and - of course - the Baltic Sea. The routes are between 70 and 204 nautical miles long and can be completed in just seven days. Let us inspire you!

As I write these lines, the sailing mecca of Les Sables-d'Olonne is buzzing. 350,000 visitors bid farewell to the 40 Vendée Globe skippers who set off on one of the toughest sporting tests in the world. Among them was Violette Dorange, the youngest athlete in the field at the age of 23. You can also find out what drives the courageous Frenchwoman, who switched from Opti to Imoca in just eight years, in the new issue.

What sailors look forward to at Christmas

It's hard to believe how quickly the year flies by. It's already time to start thinking about Christmas presents again. If you still need ideas for sailors, you'll find them here.

How do you like this article?

What's more, anyone taking a recreational boating licence learns what to do when thick fog obstructs visibility. In the simplest case, you drop anchor away from the fairway and wait. If you have a radar unit on board, you can continue sailing with confidence. We present 14 models and reveal what the latest technology can do.

Martin Hager

Editor in Chief YACHT

Martin Hager is editor-in-chief of the titles YACHT and BOOTE EXCLUSIV and has been working for Delius Klasing Verlag for 20 years. He was born in Heidelberg in 1978 and started sailing at the age of six, in an Opti of course. This was soon followed by 420s, Sprinta Sport and 470s, which he also sailed on the regatta course with his brother. His parents regularly took him on charter trips through the Greek and Balearic Islands. Even at a young age, it was clear to him that he wanted to turn his passion for water sports into a career. After graduating from high school and completing an internship at the Rathje boatbuilding company in Kiel, it was clear that he did not want to become a classic boatbuilder. Instead, he successfully studied shipbuilding and marine engineering in the Schleswig-Holstein state capital and focused on yacht design wherever he could. His diploma thesis dealt with the “Testing of a new speed prediction method for sailing yachts”. In 2004, the superyacht magazine BOOTE EXCLUSIV was looking for an editor with technical and nautical background knowledge, a position that was perfect for Martin Hager. The application was successful and a two-year traineeship was arranged. After twelve years as an editor, the editorial team changed and he took over responsibility for BOOTE EXCLUSIV as editor-in-chief in 2017. After long-time YACHT editor-in-chief Jochen Rieker moved to the role of publisher, Martin Hager also took over the position of editor-in-chief of Europe's largest sailing magazine YACHT, which is celebrating its 120th anniversary this year, at the beginning of 2023. When he's not working on topics for the two water sports titles, Martin Hager likes to go out on the water himself - preferably with kite and wingfoil equipment or on a little after-work trip across the Alster.
