Hardly any other sport or hobby is as much in harmony with nature as sailing. We love the sun on our skin and the wind in our hair when we are on board. These weather ingredients guarantee us the best hours at sea, sporting fun on the regatta course or steady progress on the route to the next waypoint. But the line we walk as water sports enthusiasts is a fine one. There are only a few knots of wind between marvellous champagne sailing on a half-wind course and days of being caught in a swell or a dreary calm.
Our brave German squad was particularly hard hit by this closeness to nature in the Olympic sailing area of Marseille. The races in the fantastically beautiful bay rarely offered our athletes enough action for real sailing fun and unfortunately not the perfect conditions for a medal. Is it just the weather that got in the way of the battle for the coveted trophies? Certainly not, and yet there is a connection. In the new issue you will find a summary by our Olympic expert Tatjana Pokorny, who was at the Games this year for the ninth time as a sports reporter.
If you want to hear more stories about the world's biggest sporting event, I recommend listening to YACHT podcast episodes #16 and #18 - wherever podcasts are available. The new YACHT 19/2024 is now available at newsagents and newsagents, as well as in the Delius Klasing App ready for download. Or you can simply order them directly here...
To coincide with the doldrums, we reveal how AI programmes influence the weather forecast and whether you will be able to stay out of storms or mild breezes even better in future thanks to artificial intelligence. And: triggered by our navigation series in issues 12 to 16/2024, many readers asked us about the perfect navigation equipment, which is why we are addressing this wonderfully analogue topic in great detail.
What's more, do you still go out the door without a smartphone, let alone on a cruise? Probably not. Like tablets and cameras, these handy communication wonders are usually on the move and need to be charged regularly. The best way to do this is with USB sockets, which are easy to retrofit. We show you how.
Enjoy this issue!
