The German Navy will continue to conduct live-fire exercises off the Baltic Sea coast in the coming months. The areas designated for these exercises have now been identified and announced.

The German Navy’s exercises will take place in the three firing ranges of Kiel Bay, Arkona and Pomeranian Bay. Gunfire and torpedoes will be used. The exact boundary coordinates were published by the responsible Baltic Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority in a Current Notice to Mariners (BfS).

Areas are not closed

The exercises may take place at any time of the day or night. However, regardless of this, firing will only take place if the firing zone is actually clear. The areas are therefore not closed to shipping and remain navigable. The shipping lanes shown on the nautical chart – the Kiel–Flensburg Route and the Kiel–Baltic Sea Route – are not subject to any firing at all.

Signals by day and by night

Vessels involved shall display the signal “NE4” in accordance with the International Code of Signals and shall carry the lights and signals prescribed in the Collision Regulations and the Regulations for Navigation on Waterways. Should vessels come dangerously close to the floating targets at night, the vessel towing the target shall fire white flares and shall also illuminate the target.
