The Gieselau lock in Schleswig-Holstein is closed for five months.
The Gieselau lock will be closed over the winter months. Cruises across the Eider to the Kiel Canal will not be possible again until April 2026.

With a length of just 2.8 kilometres, the Gieselau Canal in Schleswig-Holstein is one of the shortest federal waterways, but it plays an all the more important role: it connects the navigable Eider with the Kiel Canal west of Rendsburg and thus creates a more northerly connection between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. However, passage will not be possible this winter: the lock in the Gieselau Canal will be closed.

As the responsible waterway and shipping authority for the Kiel Canal stated in the corresponding Notice to mariners the Gieselau lock will be out of operation from 1 November 2025 to 31 March 2026. According to the WSA, the time will be used for maintenance and repair work. Skippers who want to use the winter to cross between the seas will then have to choose the route via the entire stretch of the NOK.

Christian Tiedt was born in Hamburg in 1975, but grew up in the northern suburbs of the city - except for numerous visits to the harbor, North Sea and Baltic Sea, but without direct access to water sports for a long time. His first adventures then took place on dry land: With the classics from Chichester, Slocum and Co. After completing his vocational training, his studies finally gave him the opportunity (in terms of time) to get active on the water - and to obtain the relevant licenses. First with cruising and then, when he joined BOOTE in 2004, with motorboats of all kinds. In the meantime, Christian has been able to get to know almost all of Europe (and some more distant destinations) on his own keel and prefers to share his adventures and experiences as head of the travel department for YACHT and BOOTE in cruise reports.
