Bremerhaven is planning to build a new northern pier, as announced by the Senate. The estimated cost of the project, including the beacon, is 32.2 million euros. The new structure at the mouth of the Geestemündung will be 280 metres long and seven metres wide. The historic tower will return as a nautical beacon and urban landmark.
"With the new northern pier, we are permanently ensuring safe access to the fishing harbour," explained Bremen's Senator for Economic Affairs Kristina Vogt (Left Party). "At the same time, by rebuilding the pier tower, we are preserving a piece of maritime heritage and strengthening the tourist appeal of the location."
In August 2022, part of the pier sank, causing the lighthouse at the tip of the pier to lean dangerously. The lighthouse with its characteristic red head caused a nationwide sensation and the structure eventually had to be dismantled and demolished, much to the regret of the people of Bremerhaven.
On Rügen, too, a few weeks ago the Kollicker Ort" lighthouse had to be dismantled due to an acute risk of falling. Due to the impassable terrain on the steep coast, a transport helicopter was used. The iconic "Roter Sand" lighthouse in the German Bight is also in danger of collapsing.
