According to current plans, the ageing Fehmarn Sound Bridge is to be completed by 2032 as part of the new fixed link across the Fehmarnbelt. be replaced by a tunnel. The road and railway bridge, which is more than 60 years old and almost a kilometre long, has been in a permanent state of repair for years. This has repeatedly led to restrictions for shipping traffic - as is the case again now.
The bridge with its buoyed fairway is part of the Kiel-Fehmarnsund route, the shortest connection between the Bay of Kiel and the Bay of Lübeck. Normally, the clearance height is 23 metres. However, due to the installation of scaffolding in the middle section, only 20 metres are now available - already too little for many medium-sized cruising yachts.
The measure was approved by the responsible Baltic Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority in a current relevant notice to mariners (BfS) and is expected to last until 31 May 2026 - well into the start of the season. Particular caution is therefore required in the area of the bridge.
