Is sailing also beautiful because it is so complex? After all, the hobby, or should we say the passion, always presents challenges and hurdles that need to be overcome. First of all, we have to learn how to handle the tiller, wheel and sheets. Then there's the theory, physics, rules, we have to get licences. Then we need a boat that needs to be chartered or bought. We have to master the boat and its technology. And when we think we know everything, there's always something new, the accessories sector is constantly supplying us with even more sailing materials, ropes, fittings and electronic components.
It never ends. For all its history, sailing is always a further development and a technical challenge. Take the Quant GT 33: the sports boat is equipped with the Dynamic Stability System (test in this issue). DSS is a horizontal profile that is pushed out on the leeward side of a boat and generates dynamic buoyancy, which increases the stability of the boat - a development that will also be found on cruising boats.
Long familiar with foils, Germany's most experienced ocean sailor Boris Herrmann had to manoeuvre and motivate himself through his second Vendée Globe. The Hamburg native, who is credited with a new build by Küstenklatsch, describes how he succeeded in doing so in an interview that is well worth reading, reflecting on the recent Vendée and looking ahead to the next one. A challenge.
