The world is full of attractive destinations for yachts. And yet there are harbours and places that stand out. Here we present ten of these destinations. This time Port Vauban in Antibes.

Topics in this article

If you think of the Côte d'Azur, its seaside resorts form a glittering string of pearls. The big names catch the eye: Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Nice. Places whose sophisticated charm is almost proverbial.

Antibes and the Port Vauban

Antibes, however, is not quite as radiant - although it is in no way inferior to its famous sisters. On the contrary: it is just as easy to get lost in its winding old town alleyways and extensive hotel complexes, boutiques and bars as elsewhere along the picturesque coast.

There is also a proud list of famous guests, from Napoleon (after his escape from Elba) to Pablo Picasso, Gary Cooper and Coco Chanel. And then there is the harbour: Port Vauban.

Unique: the "Billionaires' Quay"

In terms of the total tonnage gathered here, the marina occupies an absolute top position - not only on the French Riviera, but in the entire Mediterranean. The Camille Rayon Quay, which was opened by the International Yacht Club d'Antibes in 1986, contributes to this. It is also known as the "Billionaires' Quay" and can accommodate 18 superyachts up to 160 metres in length.

An eye on the future

At the same time, the harbour is undergoing a transformation that should ensure its future attractiveness as a nautical destination. It is not the first transformation: the Fort Carré high above the water hints at the earlier military planning, realised by the master fortress builder of the Sun King Louis XIV himself, the Seigneur de Vauban.

Christian Tiedt was born in Hamburg in 1975, but grew up in the northern suburbs of the city - except for numerous visits to the harbor, North Sea and Baltic Sea, but without direct access to water sports for a long time. His first adventures then took place on dry land: With the classics from Chichester, Slocum and Co. After completing his vocational training, his studies finally gave him the opportunity (in terms of time) to get active on the water - and to obtain the relevant licenses. First with cruising and then, when he joined BOOTE in 2004, with motorboats of all kinds. In the meantime, Christian has been able to get to know almost all of Europe (and some more distant destinations) on his own keel and prefers to share his adventures and experiences as head of the travel department for YACHT and BOOTE in cruise reports.
